In secular fields the pace of progress towards more informed knowledge of Gypsies was only slightly less laggard. There were some hints of modest progress on the linguistic front...More immediately important was the publication in 1597...of 71 Romani words with Latin equivalents...by...Joseph Scaliger,...the most erudite scholar of his time...Scaliger appears to have conducted his research in some tavern, to judge by the prominence of expressions connected with drinking.(NO! lolol)
