The flag is appropriate, for to me, this woman is a profile of an American. She didn’t want help and certainly not pity. She was ingenious, found a place that met basic needs, shelter from the elements, safety, and did so without doing anyone any harm. She had “enough” for herself and was living her life her way. And when discovered, she simply moved on to parts unknown.
America was peopled with those such as her: the resourceful, the brave, striking out on their own—alone—into the wilderness, here an urban wilderness, and not merely surviving but content with what others would find lacking.
