Turkey is a NATO member. Russian president Vladimir Putin said the shootdown was a "stab in Russia's back drlivered by terrorist accomplices," and said there would be "tragic consequences" to Russian-Turkey relations. There have been previous violations of Turkish airspace by Russian fighters. The Turks have been furious and warned the Russian jets away. Turkey sats it warned the Russian pilot ten times in five minutes without response. Russia claims its plane was in Syrian airspace.
