When Trump indicated he would sign legislation to keep the government open and resolve the issue of his Wall later, his base "base" went bonkers on his ass. Ann Coulter wrote a scathing takedown of Trump that cursed everything but his birth and in the most personal terms of any of his Low Lifes. Trump blinked. He was stunned and immediately reversed course. It was shutdown uber alles.
Normal people were put off and Trump's popularity began to slide. He doubled down as he does, went on national television to appeal for his Wall. That nationwide appeal went over like a lead balloon and that is when Trump's approval began to crater.
The American people are stupid, yes we really are, but Trump has so backed himself into a corner and everybody has seen it. Like the bully he is when Coulter and some Red Foxes began to excoriate him as never before he panicked. He had Fox and Friends without the friends.
His cowardly retreat to intransigence was seen by all the people all the time and this time they believed their lying eyes and heard their potentate's lying mouth as never before. Trump's popularity fell drastically, it is not at the all-time low but it is on a trajectory that if it were a stock index would have traders perched on window ledges. The public overwhelmingly blames one man and one man alone, Cowardly Lyin' Trump, for the government shutdown, now past three weeks, and everything Trump has done has exacerbated his public standing.
The public does not like government shutdowns and they do not like Trump's Wall and Trump is now stuck with the unpopularity of two interwoven actions that he has made inextricably intertwined around his own neck with another existential threat, Robert Mueller, looming and cautiously approaching.
We are now in the second week of 2019. Three Democrats have announced they are running for president in 2020. Trump was embarrassed in the 2018 mid-terms and lost the House badly. And there is no sign of Trump willing to reopen the government.
I predict that this is the unexpected--Of all the scandals, this one!-- turning point in the Trump presidency. He is losing the battle of public opinion and he is determined to lose it some more. Of course it is early in the presidential election season but Trump has never been this weak when conjoined with a stubbornness to grow weaker still. And with the hyena creeping slowly to the wounded man increasingly abandoned and alone I predict we will look back to the Trump Christmas Shutdown as the tipping point when Trump lost his presidency.
