The 1977 Johnstown Flood

This was the day the music died.

For a few Johnstowners this was the third major flood in their lifetimes. For many it was the second. For those, and even for first-timers, this was the last. They simply moved away.

Johnstown forgot and rebuilt quickly after the 1889 Great Flood. After the 1936 flood they rebuilt through FDR and the Army Corps of Engineers. Johnstown had been made “flood proof.” They did not stay and rebuild after this one.
