I am so tired of reading of the ceaseless struggles of Manchester United and of the continual bitching of Arsenal fans.
United's umpteenth manager since Alex Ferguson, Ralf Rangnick, said yesterday "...fourth in the league, this is the highest possible achievement we can get." That is what it has come to for the trademark "world's greatest club": fourth in the English league? Deary me.
The "Kroenke Out" signs are back outside Emirates Stadium in London. The "Gunners" are sixth, two points out of fourth (auto UCL) with three matches in hand. What set off the Gooners this time? Owner Stan Kroenke's Los Angeles "Rams" winning the Super Bowl. Their reasoning goes if he had spent half as much on Arsenal as he did on building SoFi Stadium the soccer team would have won the Champions League. Never mind that he spent the 2022 equivalent of $863,000,000 building Emirates Stadium in 2004. Another American owner, John Henry, delivered Liverpool their first title since 1990 in 2019 through his famous shrewd spending and his team's talent-scouting. Liverpool 2019 were the best team I personally have ever seen.
I don't know if Arsenal have underachieved; I do know Manchester United have. I don't know the reasons for either if Arsenal have as well. Whatever they are if these two clubs could get their acts together the top of the Premier League wouldn't be so godawful boring. The EPL desperately needs them to step up.
