O’Connor, a virulent opponent of the Catholic Church, converted to Islam in 2018 and changed her name to Shuhada Sadaqat, while still performing under her birth name. O’Connor rocketed to fame in 1990 with her recording of Nothing Compares to U which became the global number one best-selling song. The music video put a face to the voice and became as well-known as the song.
No cause of death has been given although O’Connor was bipolar and had experienced suicidal ideation in the past. Her son Shane, died at age 17 last year. No sense in being Irish without tragedy. Rest in peace.
