It was written on my mind
Like the back of an envelope
Rehearsed and very carefully in reach
My cool cucumber non-committal speech

?
That I wrote while hanging out down at the beach
:)
And I shivered from the cold of the ice in my granite heart
Knowing that you didn't have a prayer
!
And then I rang the bell and you were there
(nervous)
And darling
Then your face was full of me
And then your eyes were too

LOL
And I knew, that you knew that I knew that
You knew that I knew that you knew that
I knew that you knew that I knew

WHAT?!! FALLING DOWN LOL.

That, friends and enemies, is the songwriting of Jimmy Webb ("By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "MacArthur Park," et al.), 1968, "Montage," written for the movie "How Sweet It Is" starring James Garner and Debbie Reynolds, recorded as a single by "The Love Generation." The Love Generation! Omg.

Who writes like that?! That song is something pop songs almost never are: funny and self-aware. There are a lot of country songs that do that but not many pop songs. And the instrumentals reinforce the wry lyrics: light at the beginning--Ba ba-ba Ba ba-ba Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba--and then the Mystic Chords when the girl answers the door--the cymbals Crash!-- and he folds like a cheap suitcase. Or, as Mr. Webb writes it:

I regained my self-control and I tried to close my big fat mouth
Before 'I love you' fell out on the floor

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!
I didn't feel like Batman anymore
You can HEAR laughter in the background!
I hit my bloody elbow on the door
NO!
And then your brother asked if I had money for a haircut
OH!
And the pimple on my neck began to hurt
Ha-ha-ha!
Suddenly I wished I'd changed my shirt and darling...

Tremendous, TREMENDOUS! Jimmy Webb, here's to you.
