Incessant physical discomfort that ebbs to almost nothing and then intensifies, approaches and then crosses into pain is physically, mentally and emotionally taxing.

The body fights pain vigorously and unconsciously. Pain is fatiguing. The exercises that push pain back toward and across the divide into discomfort and then to 90%-95% normalcy are themselves painful. Perspiration runs off the forehead and soaks the shirt top. Exercising in pain is fatiguing.

The whole cycle dominates the mind and distracts. Discomfort impairs concentration; pain prevents it. One gets antsy, moving around, changing position, hurrying to nowhere. It is with will that one suppresses truthful answers to the casual greeting, “How you doing?” One becomes self-conscious of painful grimaces, of a too-loud moan, of a gait that gives away the true state. One is too self aware to behave naturally. Mood is impaired; one is impatient and irritable. The cycle is all-consuming.
