Around The Association

I saw that Charlotte lost another one last night, 104-103, to San Antone. Charlotte was 21-39, "Spurs" 25-34. The game was in Charlotte. "Hornets" probably should have won that one. Then I looked, just out of curiosity, at the attendance: 12,008. Sixty-three percent of capacity. That stings. The buzz around the original Charlotte "Hornets" was extraordinary, the Charlotte Coliseum was always sold out and the noise was deafening and intimidating. I've been there. A palace compared to what I was used to in the old Miami Arena. Ingress and egress could not have been easier. Why did it only last nineteen years?

The original "Hornets" became the New Orleans "Pelicans" and Charlotte was without an NBA team for two seasons. They were reborn as the "Bobcats" in 2004/05 and peaked with 44 wins in 2009/10. They never finished higher than seventh in the Eastern Conference and made the playoffs only two of ten years, in both those seventh place finish seasons, and were promptly broomed by Orlando and Miami.

The "Bobcats" were renamed the "Hornets" for 2014/15, Michael Jordan became owner at sometime, and in five completed seasons the new "Hornets" made the playoffs just once in 2015/16, finishing sixth in the East, and were beaten in the first round by Miami again, four games to three. This season so far they are tenth in the East and twenty-eighth in the Association in attendance at 15,504. They're only 491 per game from being dead last and last night's 12,008 point them in that direction.

Sad. Very sad. You fuck with people too much they're not going to let you do it again. Charlotte's NBA fans have been fucked with too many times and they're staying away. Can't blame them. It's sad.
