Taliban Intent

Taliban commander says group will apply sharia law

“There will be no democratic system at all because it does not have any base in our country. We will not discuss what type of political system should we apply in Afghanistan because it is clear. It is sharia law, and that is it.”
Waheedullah Hashimi, who Reuters says has access to the group’s decision-making.

So, two political organizations in the world who reject science, want to impose fundamentalist religious rule, and who cannot govern. No wonder Trump invited the Taliban to Camp David!

President Biden should welcome headlines like that.

These are the questions Democrats want to debate with Republicans: What would Republicans do if they steal another presidential election--restart the war for another twenty years, a trillion dollars and over 2,000 U.S. servicemen killed?  critics have Biden do? Another twenty years? Put the U.S. troops back in?

The Afghanistan War suffered from terminal mission creep. From deprive "The Base" of a base, to "Operation Enduring Freedom" to "Operation Freedom's Sentinel." During two terms of President George W. Bush  two terms of President Barack Obama, one term of President Donald J. Trump, there was no freedom that endured, there was no freedom over which to stand sentinel, no democracy "because it does not have any base in our country;" there was the dithering spinelessness of Cadet Bone Spurs. And there was this: the sight of the corrupt American-backed president of Afghanistan fleeing his own country; there was the sight of American-trained Afghan soldiers driving hundreds of their military vehicles over the border and handing them over to Iran; there was the sight of Afghan citizens cutting their own separate peace with the Taliban, and of those who didn't fleeing like cowardly Cubans begging the Americans to take them with them, or better yet, stay and fight their battles for them; there was the sight of the Taliban just where the Americans found them in 2001, in charge of the country with no prospects for democracy. And then there was the sight of one resolute man with the spine to say it: "No." No and hell no. No to it all and enough.

President Biden's resolve, and the chaotic start to the evacuation, has set a "criticism-creep" trap for Republicans. They can't resist it. The criticism is creeping from "BOTCHED WITHDRAWAL!", to which the president has no defense (try though he may), to "SHARIA LAW!" What? Afghans want a theocracy rather than a democracy just like Republicans do. Come, Republicans, oh please come with that. Those blows strike with the force of marshmallows. And his counter knocks them flat. "They're the pro-COVID, anti-science, pro-theocracy, anti-democracy party; they are the pro Afghan-democracy party, the pro Cuban-democracy party, and the anti American-democracy party. They're the pro Afghan-war party now, they were the pro Afghan-withdrawal party a minute ago before which they were the pro enduring-Afghan war party. They will fight for anybody but America. Republicans hate America." Yes, come Republicans, do come.
