The Last Summer

Precisely 102 years ago today an automobile driver made a wrong turn down a street in Sarajevo. He stopped to back up and turn around. A man with a gun was standing five feet away and in that instant, in that circumstance of happenstance, the gunman fired two shots. One shot killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria; the other killed his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg.

With the assassinations the European order "unraveled," "collapsed," "disintegrated." And World War I came.
