Arright, frigging "Spain:"
Country.
Conquistadors.
Catholic.
King/Queen/monarchy
bull fighting
Right. Okay.
One priest in Andalusia had also been fined by a socialist magistrate for saying mass in his church whose roof had been destroyed by lightning: he had been charged with making a public display of religion. Another priest was fined as a monarchist for alluding to the Kingship of God in the festival of Christ the King. In one parish, the tolling of bells was taxed, in another the wearing of crucifixes forbidden.-Hugh Thomas The Spanish Civil War (101)
:o
Who knew? That was in 1933, too. You'd also think "stable," "European," right? They had a frigging civil war from 1936-1939 and before that had a century, at least, of instability. Spain's Golden Age? The 16th century. Anarchism's Golden Age was also in Spain in the 20th century. Spanish Anarchism is what led me to buy Hugh Thomas' book. Anarchists were a force!
The trade union CDT (No, I don't remember what the letters stand for.) was the anarchist's advance guard. Their military "leader" ("leader" and anarchism sort of being mutually exclusive), Buenaventura Durruti (oxymoronic, too. Durruti did not have much "good venture"),
is a revered figure in Spain to this day.
(Typical anarchist's death: he was either killed by enemy (Nationalist, i.e. Fascist) fire, accidentally shot by a body guard, or accidentally shot himself as he got out of a car.)

Maybe you'd think "beauty." The Spanish people are renowned for their beauty. Look at that girl!Seventeen year old Spanish socialist fighter. Good God! she is gorgeous.

You'd also think, not as quickly as in a word association game, Franco, Hemingway, Moors (Muslims), Guernica, and separatism (Like the Basques or something? Yes.), but who knew that Catalonia wanted to secede. And Aragon. And, and, and. They had a bitch of a time with separatism, they did.
How did they patch it all together in such a short period to be so...normal? I don't know, man, I'm on page 101 of a 900 page book.

But, you would not think, "Spain": burning of churches, rape of nuns, murder of priests, dancing with disinterred nun corpse-
-You would not think: violent anti-Catholicism.
At no time in the history of Europe, or even perhaps of the world, has so passionate hatred of religion and all its works been shown. (261-262)
Think again.
