In the last three games, the Alamo at AAA and the Wobbles in the Apple Miami opponents have scored 73.9 points within 5' on 70.5% shooting, 29th out of 30. Oh the humanity! The horror, the horror. That is, the metaphors are endless, the fatal flaw in this team's positionless, the canary in the coal mine, the achilles heel, the dirty secret--all of which the last three opponents have figured out as a way to Beat the "Heat." And that's against three sub-par teams, one of them, NYK, an absolutely wretched team. Opponents strategy unless/until Spo changes something, and it may require a new player, is drive, drive, drive, drive to stay alive. Think about it: eventually the "Heat's" players are going to have to collapse on the interior where they'e inevitably going to have to foul. What if Jimmy, our stalwart and team leader, fouls out? We have no replacement for Jimmy Butler. Or Bam. What if the constant drives/passes to five feet have Bam foul out. There goes rebounding. Pull 7'0" Meyers Leonard into the reddest of red zones, then he's playing a position, center. They have to do something. Look again: 73.9 points per opponent in the last three games. Opponent shooting within five feet: 70.5%. You can not win with that close range capitulation. Can NOT. Vertical distance, from floor to rim, the incomparably greater increase in field goal % the closer to the rim you get, and the vertical distance, the height, of the players, these are what make the NBA unique among all of the major team sports in the world; you cannot just wave your hand and cry Positionless! and wave away that fundamental law of the game. Somebody has got to be playing defense within five feet of the basket; maybe they can do it if they have three players gang defend and prevent opponents drives to the rim--if they can simultaneoudly prevent the counter of drive and kick, but somehow, some bodies have got to defend within five feet effectively. If they can't, 73.9 ppg and 70 are going to increase as will losses. This is not sustainable. Night.
