I was thinking just now of Manchester United, they lost to some other bite team again rec...Burnley, lost to Burnley, at Ray Jay as I recall, and the ManU fans rage at the Glazers and managing idiot Ed Woodward. That rage is properly directed, the Glazers and Idiot Ed are planting that club ever more firmly in mid-table. I then thought of Cleveland. The Haslams' reverse midas touch has driven the "Browns" ever deeper into Lake Mistake muck. And then of comic sans Dan Gilbert--the "Cavaliers" have always played under Gilbert's ownership like cadavers except when they have had LeBron. And those three examples of tragi-comic incompetence had me circle back around to the Miami "Heat."

Ownership and management are so fucking critical to a sports team's success,...Daniel Snyder and the Washington "Native Americans" are another example...you'd think if an owner just hires a good head coach the sporting success would follow. The coach will get the players, coach them up and voila. But owners often don't hire a good coach, and when they do they sometimes meddle in something they know little to nothing about. The buzzword in Cleveland "Browns" circles these days is "alignment." They hired a coach first and are going to give him say in who the general manager, his boss, will be. The goal is to have vertical alignment from owner to G.M. to coach. Very worthy goal, alignment.

Miami basketball fans are blessed like they have no idea with the alignment of principal owner Micky Arison through minority owner president Pat Riley, general manager Andy Elisburg, and head coach Erik Spoelstra. The main axis, Arison-Riley, has been intact for twenty-five years now. Three world championships and a distinct Culture have followed. But the Arison-Riley axis will not be intact forever. Pat is 74 years old and Micky is 70. Après nous le déluge. The succession has got to be in place ahead of time. I think Micky's son is in the organization now (Micky inherited from father Ted) but the Glazer knuckleheads inherited United from Malcolm. You can't count on familial alignment. I hope that when the time comes Erik Spoelstra assumes Riley's place. Organizational alignment is so very important.
