This is the first image that I saw of the Kristin Lavransdatter statue in Sel, Norway, the one that caused me to look away in disbelief that there was a statue. It is my favorite image of the statue. The bronze has weathered so that some of the gold and some of the blue are identically the colors in the mountain. The face of the statue is soiled, as if mud were rubbed on it. The dress too; it looks like she has fallen in mud and is soiled.

I cannot wait to be done with this book.
