Biden Will Keep Trump’s Historically Low Refugee Limit

President Biden had promised to increase refugee admissions to 60,000 this year, but will keep to the 15,000 set by the Trump administration instead.

The decision signals Mr. Biden’s hesitant approach to rebuilding an immigration system gutted by his predecessor, who tried to close off the United States to immigrants. It also comes as the United States struggles with a surge of unaccompanied children and teenagers at the Mexican border.

...Friday’s directive comes amid growing concerns that the surge of border crossings had already overwhelmed the refugee branch of the Department of Health and Human Services, according to two senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the decision-making.

[So, is it not just a "normal" winter-early spring surge as POJO said in his press conference? It does not appear that way.]

Mr. Biden’s decision is a clear reversal from his promise in February to raise the cap of 15,000 refugees set by the Trump administration — the lowest in the program’s history. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken notified Congress on Feb. 12 that the administration planned to allow up to 62,500 refugees to enter the country in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30...

Maintaining the Trump-era admissions level of 15,000 leaves thousands of refugees who have been approved to travel to the United States stranded in camps around the world. Roughly 35,000 refugees have already been vetted by the U.S. government and are prepared to travel to the United States.

[What the fuck's he going to do with the 35k who have been approved? You could have fucking riots in those camps.]

...refugees apply for protection overseas and are forced to clear multiple levels of vetting that can often take years.
...
Mr. Biden still plans to raise the level of refugee admissions to 125,000 in October for the next fiscal year, the administration official said. [?Really? That doesn't make sense to me.]

I disagree with this action. I want more immigration. The 15k level was pique by Trump; it was wrong for him to do it and it is wrong for POJO. The president needs to explain this. Two months ago it was 62.5k, now it's 15k? What changed? Tell us. Still plans on 125k in October? What will have changed do drastically? And what is he going to do with the 35k who have already been approved?! It looks impetuous to me, not clearly thought out. Biden has a lot of explaining to do.

It is another example of an admirable trait in President Biden, however: He is not going to let a problem fester. He is going to jump right on anything that comes up. It's bold. Keeping to the limits of his Disgraced predecessor is fearless. It's inconsistent with recently announced policy. Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. Biden doesn't care that it's inconsistent or that he takes flak for it; he's going to do what he thinks needs to be done and critics can go fuck themselves. If he explains coherently we will go fuck ourselves.]
