City won today in Manchester 2-1 over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. Dortmund is fifth in the Bundesliga and City are the runaway champions-to-be of the Premier League. The quality of play in this UCL match was strikingly higher over that in the EPL. I don't remember seeing that stark a difference previously.
Great that City won, of course, however winning only 2-1 and giving up an away goal can be fatal in Champions League play. If Dortmund win their home match 1-0, they would win the tie and knock City out, on the basis of today's away goal.
Rather than the goals the most noteworthy play in the match occurred in the 28th minute. It was a bang-bang play, difficult to see in real time:
In the penalty area, City in possession, Rodri went down like a shot from the grassy knoll had struck him.
"Oh, that's a painful one," the broadcasters said. It surely looked like Dortmund's Emre Can had accidentally booted Rodri in the face and the video official upheld the call. A yellow card was given. What video the official was looking at however is a mystery, for within seconds on the broadcast this was shown:
It was like the phantom shot from the grassy knoll. It didn't happen; Emre Can's boot never made contact with Rodri. It was the fucking ball. "Surely that one gets chalked off," the color commentator said of the yellow card. My instantaneous reaction upon seeing the revelation on replay was "Dive" and "Rodri should get a red card." I was pissed. And if Rodri dived he should get a red card, and be banned from the next UCL match. But did he dive? "That's a painful one" is correct whether it was ball or boot. Surely the yellow will be reversed and perhaps a red issued to Rodri, but what the video official was looking at is the biggest scandal.
