1956 Kalitzke-Bogle Montana Double Murder Final: NOT SOLVED*

Over the last couple of hours I have had a chance to let all of the public news reports I've read on this case settle. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. For what it is worth I have concluded that the Cascade County authorities have not provided it. 

At the most basic level the prosecution has to prove two things in any criminal case: 1) that the crime(s) were committed, and 2) that the person accused committed the crime(s). The crimes of murder of Lloyd Duane Bogle and Patricia Kalitzke were committed, undoubtedly. The crime of rape of Kalitzke has not been proved to have occurred at all. I think of it this way: If Kenneth Gould were alive these cops would not have arrested him on this evidence without talking to him first. If he confessed, of course, then they have a case. But on this evidence alone the case against Gould would be promptly dismissed upon pre-trial motion and the Cascade County Sheriff's office successfully sued for reckless, malicious prosecution. The judgment against them would be so large it would bankrupt the county. Put succinctly, as it stands Kenneth Gould has not been proved guilty of committing either murder or the rape. 

Per contemporary news report immediately below Cascade County authorities were not too squeamish about addressing the sex angle publicly, they specifically told United Press "the girl had not been molested." This is just the latest (that I have run across) in that hole of the case being blown wide open.

It is easy, far too easy, for cops to hold a triumphant press conference and announce by name that they have identified through DNA the perpetrator of a 65-year old rape-murder, when the person they accuse is long dead. Over six and one-half decades the Cascade County Sheriff's Office has collected so little information and spread so much disinformation that they are not to be trusted with this case. For cheap publicity they have defamed--libeled and slandered--a dead man who cannot sue them, cannot defend himself, cannot otherwise hold them accountable. C.C.S.O. has never proved anything that was not proved in January of 1956.

I would therefore advise the murder defendants I have successfully defended that if soever they slip back into the old ways to transport the body of the deceased and dump it along a remote roadway in Cascade County, Montana. The case will never be solved, as this 1956 double has not been solved.

“Unmarked”! Kalitzke’s body “UNMARKED”. “Fully clad”. “Not been molested.” Now we have the goddamned coroner saying Kalitzke had not been raped.

1990 LA Times In Cascade County, Mont., Sheriff’s Department investigators recently pried six bullets from the trunk of a cottonwood tree in hopes of solving the 1956 double murder of Patti Kalitzke, a Great Falls, Mont., high school student, and her boyfriend, Lloyd Duane Bogle, 19.

I never understood the cops fixation on that goddamned tree. It was huge, was used as target practice in the area. They never had a murder weapon. The police theory to this day is that the "Chinese style" executioner forced both of them on their knees. Why would any cop ever think the murder bullets were in that goddamned tree? What would the police theory be of six bullets, firing squad? Kalitzke and Bogle had been shot ONCE in the back of the head. The bullets were through-and-throughs, i.e. exited the bodies. Kalitzke's body was found SEVEN MILES from Bogle's. The Kalitzke projectile traveled seven miles? No. Did you guys use a metal detector on the road above where Kalitzke's body was found, where presumably she was executed before being kicked down that hill? How about on the road where Bogle's body was found? If you're going to obsess over the bullets (with no gun to match them to!) why don't you try LIKELY places were the bullets are going to be found.

Patti Kalitzke, the tall, blond Bohemian known as “Ski” to her friends, was the talk of her high school when she showed up one day with a crew cut, a style she copied from a Dick Tracy comic strip character.

Just days after she unveiled her new look, Kalitzke became the talk of the town, this time because she and her boyfriend had been shot, execution style, in one of the most horrifying murders anyone in Great Falls could recall, said Keith Wolverton.

Wolverton was one of her classmates and now is a captain with the Cascade County Sheriff’s Department who is determined to at least try to solve the 34-year-old case.

In the Kalitzke case, a key missing piece has been the fatal bullets. Investigators suspected for years that they were embedded in a 150-year-old cottonwood tree under which the body of Kalitzke’s boyfriend was found. There was talk of felling the giant tree to find the bullets, but there never seemed to be a sound way to locate any tiny projectiles in its mass, Wolverton said.

He and his girlfriend Patricia Kalitzke were kidnapped on 2 Jan 1956 and found murdered.

Not a reputable site for facts. Just ran across it. The evidence is compelling that Kalitzke was taken forcibly, i.e. kidnapped, from the Bogle murder site, but there is no evidence of which I am aware that Bogle too was kidnapped. The "look" of both scenes is of a premeditated, laying-in-wait ambush and, yes, execution with rape.

Oh God, Mommy, you're scarier than I envisioned. Is that what that means? Sperm cell in dead girl ="definitely raped"? How long can DNA from a sperm cell last inside a dead female's vagina? A while, Scary Mommy! A fucking while! NOTHING to rule out consensual sex before the murder with someone other than Bogle. NOTHING.

That is technically true. We don’t know exactly where she was raped and she could have been raped once, say at the Bogle site, driven seven miles and raped again, but the most plausible scenario is that she was raped in the perp’s car on that road above her body.

Afterwards, the murderer forced her to dress…

Stated as fact, there is no evidence that I am aware of that. You ever hear of a zipless fuck? If it had been promulgated as a theory, that would be a very, very good theory. The killer was trying to throw the gendarmes off. Don’t make it look like a rape as it certainly would if a murdered girl were found nude in January in Montana.

2014 Great Falls Tribune Now, retired Great Falls police Detective John Cameron — famous for helping bring suspects to trial in several murder cases — claims to have an answer.

The killer, he writes in his new book, “It’s Me: Edward Wayne Edwards, the Serial Killer You Never Heard Of,” was the titular criminal, who died in prison in 2011 at age 77 after claiming responsibility for five homicides in Wisconsin and Ohio.

Those killings included the 1980 deaths of two 19-year-old sweethearts who vanished from a wedding reception hall in Wisconsin where Edwards worked briefly as a handyman, as well as an Ohio couple shot — like Kalitzke and Bogle — in the back of the head in 1977.

As he looked into the case, Cameron discovered that Deer Lodge Prison records indicate Edwards had arrived in Great Falls with his then-wife in January 1956 before being arrested in Billings for a robbery charge the following March.

“You have an admitted serial killer who was in town on the day that we have a double murder of a couple on lover’s lane in 1956,” Cameron said, noting that he was struck by the similarities in the killings. “That’s the evidence I have.”

That's good, Mr. Cameron, but Sgt. Kadner's got DNA.

While DNA evidence collected from a swab of Kalitzke’s body failed to return a match to Edwards, that hasn’t deterred Cameron, who previously told the Tribune he thought it was possible the DNA belonged to a 1950s-era medical examiner who wouldn’t have worn gloves.

That's lame, Mr. Cameron. You didn't know it was a sperm cell didja? You're obsessed with Edwards. Try stamp collecting.

Sgt. Jon Kadner...began working with BODE Technology to generate a new DNA sample from the original sample and in 2019, a sample was successfully created, he said.

Despite the wording there is nothing fishy about this if what they did is "amplify" the DNA present of the original. If something else is meant by "generate a new DNA sample" then I don't know. If you have a SPERM CELL, however...well, because of age it sounds reasonable to have needed to amplify it.

That sample was uploaded to a open-source database of DNA samples...

The sample was compatible to three people in the database and CCSO investigators contacted those family members for interviews and DNA samples.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT WAS COMPATIBLE TO THREE PEOPLE?! I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST GOULD! Wait. WHAT?! I had not read anything about "compatible to three people" previously. Since DNA is the only evidence that Kenneth Gould was the perpetrator of this rape-double, this is distressing to read.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN "LINKED"? I think what this means is the following: When you have unknown DNA, or a fingerprint, you submit it for a presumptive match to a database like this open-source DNA or a similar fingerprint database that has prints digitally converted. With both DNA and fingerprints you may get back a number of potentials, what this article refers to in DNA as "compatible." That just narrows your focus. With either DNA or prints the sample and potentials are then compared by a trained analyst. The DNA analyst is looking for the same pattern of "alleles" on the same chromosome loci (up to twenty) in both sample and potential. U.S. DNA analysts do not use the term "match", they quantify their findings with sexy numbers like there is a one-in-a-kazillion chance of somebody else being the source of the DNA. Okay, too much information.

At the time of the murders and in many subsequent news reports, it was reported that there was no indication that Kalitzke had been sexually assaulted and that she had been found fully clothed.

Kadner said that autopsy photos and reports indicated she had multiple blunt force trauma injuries, that the state’s medical examiner said were consistent with sexual assault or a struggle.

Kadner said that it’s possible that at the time of the murders, investigators might not have recognized the sexual assault or that they didn’t want that publicly disclosed.

I have read that before and every time I have I get pissed. Anything is possible, isn't it Kadner? Anything, including that Gould didn't do it, that there's something the fuck wrong with your evidence. True, sir? Including the "possibility" that maybe your Sheriff at the time, Mr. D.J. Leeper, did "recognize" signs of sexual assault AND DIDN'T FUCKING SEE ANY? They swabbed Kalitzke's vagina, didn't they? Why did they do that, do you think? Like is it "possible" they did suspect Kalitzke had been raped? 

I know what medical examiners mean when they say "consistent with," Sgt. Kadner. I would run my entire fucking theory of the case through the M.E. and ask "Now then Doctor, is that scenario consistent with the evidence you found at autopsy?" "It's consistent." Coming from a doctor "it's consistent with" has the force of "Yeah, the murderer wrote his fucking name on the body." SHOW US THE PHOTOS SHOWING MULTIPLE BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA! I have seen two that you showed at your presser, one, Kalitzke's left side that looks like she fell down in some grass, WHICH SHE FUCKING DID WHEN SHE WAS ROLLED DOWN THAT 20' HILL! The other, the most prominent feature of which was the sole of her left foot. In neither was there evidence of "BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA" Show us Kadner, it's not that I don't believe you, it's just that I don't know if you can tell your asshole from a prairie dog hole. (As you can probably tell, I'm getting upset.) What about Sheriff Leeper telling the world that Kalitzke had not been physically assaulted? Take your word for it Kadner, good sheriffs just didn't say the r--- word in Montana in 1956. Is there any reason you know of, Sgt., why your predecessor would not have said "injured", "beaten," "suffered blunt force trauma"? THE ONLY THING TYING KENNETH GOULD TO THIS RAPE DOUBLE IS DNA. 

The biggest problems in modern DNA profiling are 1) degraded samples 2) contaminated samples and 3) samples that contain mixtures of more than one person's DNA. You can look it up on any popular reference page, any of them will tell you the the biggest problems are degraded, contaminated, and mixtures. So in this fucking case we have DNA on a glass fucking slide taken by some morgue fucking technician in MONTANA SIXTY-FIVE FUCKING YEARS AGO and stored in the case file until somebody in the 21st century decided to send it out for a look-see. AND the evidence sample's a mix.  A vaginal swab is a mix, it contains the DNA of the woman, and if she has had sex recently, the DNA of the dude. AND the sample was "compatible" with the DNA of three people, two of whom were NOT named Kenneth fucking Gould. AND they didn't have Gould's DNA since he died and had been cremated so they had to get DNA from his relatives. The fucking sperm cell was "LINKED," whatever the fuck that means, to Gould through relatives, all of whom have slightly different DNA, right? since DNA is unique to the individual (except in identical twins). THESE ARE FUCKING BIG FUCKING CONCERNS! SHOW US THE FUCKING DNA REPORT! There is no straight line from Patty Kalitzke's vagina to Kenneth Gould's sperm, it is a squiggly fucking degraded, amplified line to Gould's relatives. THAT MAY STILL BE GOOD ENOUGH! but the absence of any other connection of Kenneth Gould to this case really fucking bothers me.
