Cultural Revolution.

How did I get on this?...Ah! Had a reader today courtesy search keyword Weili Ye, googled "Weili Ye Cultural Revolution" and the fifth image was,

"Cultural Revolution remnants." Thought that was interesting so googled "cultural revolution rem...Wait a minute! You Google "Weili Ye Cultural Revolution" and you get "Cultural Revolution remnant?!"  Ho-ho-ho-ho-ho. Oh my God!!!!! PAUSE

UNPAUSE. Oh my God. That tickled my funny bone. Okay.

Okay...There are still CR remnants and artifacts all over China, not just in Beijing (maybe particularly not in Beijing), but also in the provinces; the one that came up with Weili Ye's name is from Anhui. They are haunting reminders of a haunted time

I forget where I went next from there but somehow I ran across this adorable image of an installation artwork by friend Ai Weiwei:

The installation is called "Sunflower Seeds." (?)

The east is red, the sun is rising.
China has brought forth a Mao Zedong.

He amasses fortune for the people,
Hurrah, he is the people's saving star.

Chairman Mao loves the people,
He is our guide,
To build a new China,
Hurrah, he leads us forward!

The Communist Party is like the sun,
Wherever it goes, there is light.
Wherever there is a Communist Party,
Hurrah, there the people are liberated!

Sun imagery, sunflower imagery were very prevalent in the CR and that imagery was present at the creation, in 1964 with The East is Red epic. Today's Chinese are the seeds of that evil flower. Ai's "seeds" are of individually handcrafted porcelain and there are millions of them. Made to last forever? Not destined to be remnants? Ho-ho-ho-ho.
