The New York Times, CNN and Reuters are all now reporting that Congresswoman Giffords, above, is alive, thank God, Reuters using the wording "clinging to life," the Times quoting her surgeon as saying he was "very optimistic" of her recovery. The Reuters report below was from earlier in the day and cited National Public Radio for the information that Congresswoman Giffords was dead. The number of wounded is widely varied.
