Ukraine Has Not Yet Died.

But it is getting closer to death.

Russia is now doing in the east and in cities across Ukraine what it did in Crimea two weeks ago: starting or provoking violence among Ukrainians and Russian ethnics in Ukraine and then using that as a pretext for what's next, an invasion of all Ukraine. In Donetsk and Kharkiv three people are dead and the Russian Foreign Ministry today issued a statement similar to the one it did on Crimea. From Reuters Saturday:

Using language similar to that which preceded the seizure of Crimea two weeks ago, Russia's foreign ministry issued a new statement on Saturday saying Moscow was considering "numerous appeals with requests for defense of peaceful citizens" after "provocations" by "ultra-nationalist militants".

Just a couple days ago The New York Times headlined that Russian troops were massing all along the Western border with Ukraine.

Meanwhile another article, in the Washington Post, argues that Russia will be getting a ward in Crimea, that Crimea is a "consolation prize" for Russia because it can't have all Ukraine. Russia can have all Ukraine. They are going to get it. Crimea was not a consolation prize. Crimea was the opening grab for all Ukraine.

And at the United Nations Saturday, Russia used it's veto to defeat a Security Council resolution condemning today's referendum in Crimea. China abstained.
