“The analogy we use around here sometimes, and I think is accurate, is if a J.V. team puts on Lakers uniforms, that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant."
That's the analogy they use around there. The J.V.'s beat the first team of Falluja, Iraq the same month.
May 28, 2014:
“A strategy that involves invading every country that harbors terrorist networks is naΓ―ve and unsustainable.”
Because if we did that we'd be invading all Islamic countries! An invasion of all of Islamic countries is unsustainable without a formal declaration of war, reinstitution of the draft, full mobilization of the economy, yada yada. But it is not naive. "Invasion" is so 20th century, too, so three yards and a cloud of dust, to switch to a tackle football analogy. How about the military equivalent of the forward pass? The U.S. developed these things called "nuclear weapons," later upgraded in version 2.0 to "thermonuclear weapons," late in the first half of the 20th c. Obama could do that and all the manpower needed would be the tip of his index to press a button. No? Alright, then.
August 7, 2014:
Obama does indeed throw some long bombs at the J.V.'s in Iraq to salutary effect. First and ten, do it again! And says, "We're not going to let them establish some caliphate in Syria and Iraq." :) But, says the U.S. is not going to become the "Iraqi air force." :(
September 10, 2014:
Getting more comfortable with the passing game:
“We will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are. That means I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq,”

Renewed committment to the running game--by Syrian rebels, previously only a "fantasy" of others.
"Mr. Obama’s efforts to reassure the public, his remarks were a stark acknowledgment of the threat posed by the militants, whose lightning advance through Iraq and Syria and videotaped beheading of two American journalists have reignited fears of radical Islamic terrorism."-Quasi's.
Jay-Vees "better than expected."
Jay-Vees "better than expected."

Clapper to the crapper:
“Our head of the intelligence community, Jim Clapper, has acknowledged that, I think, they underestimated what had been taking place in Syria [by ISIS]. That’s true. That’s absolutely true."
Absolutely true: ISIS not Jay-Vees no more.

“The world must continue to lift up the voices of Muslim clerics and scholars who teach the true peaceful nature of Islam."
“Our campaign to prevent people around the world from being radicalized to violence is ultimately a battle for hearts and minds."
Cuckoo! Cuckoo! I'm cuckoo for cocoa puffs!

Iraqi's to the crapper:
"We are nor losing."
The Iraqi Army is losing:
“If they [Iraqi Army] are not willing to fight for the security of their country we cannot do that for them.”
June 8, 2015:
"We don't have yet a complete strategy. The details are not worked out."
Iraqi's out of the crapper:
"After the Islamic State seized Ramadi President Obama called the development a setback that had “galvanized” the Iraqi government."-Quasi's
A "galvanizing" loss. You can learn a lot in defeat.
