Cuban-Americans in Miami celebrating Fidel Castro's death. Since 1959 Cuban exiles have toasted "Next year in Cuba!"
Next year has arrived.
The original exile generation has died out or is...old. How many of them will go back? Their children and grandchildren are my friends and colleagues. They were born here. I cannot imagine that they would give up their legal careers and tell their "American," as they call them, spouses. "Este año en Cuba!" "If you must darling. Leave the children here with me and do have a lovely rest of your life. Write often, K?"
But the Cuban-Americans above look spry and still loyal enough to the old country that few of them have ever known to move back! Maybe they will! If they do, I wish them a lovely rest of their lives but there's no need to write.
