That is a significant difference. It is a difference with significance to millions of people.
And to reputations.
The ECMWF model, which is put out only twice a day, was first to have this...significant westward trot by Irma. The American model incorporates the European forecast in its mix, which is why NHC's 5 pm map also moves Irma westward.
It is The National Hurricane Center, for God's sake, you mean to tell me a real 'Murican anything lost out (and has been beaten consistently) by a European something-or-other? Whoever is proved "wrong" here is going to take a significant hit from Irma, too.
