MAC Cancels Football

The Mid-American Conference, the instantiation of “mid-major”, canceled its football season yesterday. Two athletic directors of schools in the five major conferences told CBS their conferences should do likewise. The Power Five have said they will play reduced conference-only schedules. When you tug on the MAC string the whole fabric of major college football tends toward unraveling. Because of their location in the middle of the country MAC schools are filler staples on all majors’ schedules. The games are financially essential to the MAC. By moving to conference-only the Power Five made yesterday’s announcement inevitable. It seems increasingly likely that the Power Five will bow to the facts on the ground and in the air of the Trump Epidemic and cancel their seasons also.
