Friends and enemies, the time since the Snowden revelations began has been the most dispiriting of this wanderer's life. I lost my country. I have recorded every dispiriting change that has occurred in my thinking and feeling as that realization has sunk in. The soul of America changed with the attacks of September 11, 2001. If the soul of America was, as I believe, the pursuit of happiness, a confident, extroverted, aggressive positivism, before those attacks it became an aggressive, fearful, defensive negativism afterwards. The result was the creation of the Deep State, at first illegal, then legally approved, under President George W. Bush and continued under President Obama. But that is the government, not the people, right? No, no, in a democracy you can't make that dodge. In a democracy, the government is the people. The United States government has become the gravest threat to freedom in the world today which means that the American people are the gravest threat to freedom. We elected and reelected President Bush, we elected and reelected President Obama. We elected and reelected the senators and congresspeople who knew of and approved the Deep State and who now defend it. Just recently the House of Representatives voted to extend the domestic surveillance programs of the NSA. Democracy in America has resulted in a loss of freedom in America, the loss of private communication is total. The American people are the cause of these losses. Attacks on the American Deep State are justified; attacks on the American people to that end are justified. This democracy in America must be brought down.
