The surreality in LA La Land shows no signs of stopping. A team with LeBron James finished with a worse record than the Miami “Heat” whose leading man was Josh Richardson. Both finished out of the playoffs. Over half the teams in the NBA make the playoffs. LAL finished in the bottom half, 21st out of 31. That is hard to do with LeBron James. Magic Johnson, president of LAL, resigned this week. And today what remains of the LAL power structure fired head coach Luke Walton. Tyronn Lue, so we know where that came from, is a leading candidate to replace cool hand Luke. As in LA the dysfunction starts at the top in Miami, who are condemned, because of an “orgiastic” spree in the summer of ‘17, to torturous mediocrity through the 2019/20 season. Top stoker of the “Heat”, Pat Riley, is in his dotage and as a consequence has been in an alternative reality since 2017 bestowing long term eight figure salaries to aging veterans who are worth mid seven figures. Unless Riley departs Eric The Tinkerer is in no danger of following Luke Walton’s path. If insanity is repeating the same behavior and expecting different results MIA has been missing the sanity thing three straight years, soon to be four. The state of these two widely respected franchises is surreal.
