Man was given no obligations by God, only rights, according to Thomas Jefferson. I do not believe that Michelangelo felt so much a "right" to sculpt that marble, although right he did have; I think he felt he had an obligation to do it, and to struggle to do it; an obligation to Man and to God to struggle to sculpt. Michelangelo did not drift, either. He had a policy.
